Trench signs played a crucial role during the First World War by providing essential navigation and communication for soldiers in the chaotic and often disorienting environment of the trenches. These signs helped guide troops through the intricate network of trenches, marking important locations such as command posts, medical stations, and supply depots. They were vital for maintaining order and coordination, ensuring that soldiers could quickly find their way to critical points, even under the cover of darkness or amidst the confusion of battle. Trench signs also conveyed vital information about hazards, such as gas warnings or the presence of enemy fire, contributing significantly to the safety and efficiency of the troops on the front lines.

This particular Trench Sign was for the Walking Wounded—those who could still walk, but required medical assistance. They were initially sent to an Advanced Dressing Station, and if more seriously wounded, they would then be sent to either a Main Dressing Station or a Casualty Clearing Station.

As an artist deeply moved by the sacrifices made during the First World War, I drew this piece as a memorial and for Remembrance of the many medical personnel, both men and women, who selflessly risked and often gave their own lives to save those wounded on the battlefield. The role of these medics was critical — they operated under constant threat, amidst the chaos and horror of war, providing essential care in the direst of circumstances.

Many lives were lost when these medical stations became targets of enemy fire, a stark reminder of the indiscriminate nature of war.

Although my image is rendered in black and white, it is important to note that on the original sign, the cross in the middle is a striking red. This color is symbolic, representing not only the medical services but also the bloodshed and sacrifice that marked the lives of those who served. The bullet hole on the left-hand side of the sign adds another layer of poignant mystery — was this an instance of friendly fire, or does it speak to something more sinister? This detail serves as a somber reminder of the violence and uncertainty that was a constant companion to those on the front lines.

This piece of history, preserved at the Australian War Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux, France, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of those who served. Located on the walkway into the museum, it greets visitors, inviting them to reflect on the bravery and sacrifices of the past. As an artist, I am humbled to capture and convey this story through my work.

This sign is not just a relic of war; it is a symbol of humanity's resilience and the enduring spirit of remembrance. It serves as a bridge between the past and present, ensuring that the stories of those who fought and fell are never forgotten, and their sacrifices continue to inspire future generations.
