As part of the Lewis Chessmen set, the Berserker piece holds a significant place in history. The set is believed to have been crafted in Norway and brought to Scotland, highlighting the extensive reach of Norse culture and trade. In my artistic portrayal of the Viking Berserker chess piece, I sought to capture the essence of this period—one that is considered spiritual, isolated, yet rich in culture and fine artifacts. Drawing this piece transported me to a time of rugged landscapes, where Norse settlers established their presence on remote islands. The isolation of Lewis Island contributed to the preservation of these artifacts, allowing us to glimpse into a world that was both harsh and vibrant.
